Walking in the Light

"Your word is lamp to my feet and a light to my path" - Psalm 119:105
The vast majority of people on earth are spiritually blind, walking around in the dark because they are dead in their sins and separated from God's light. It is not surprising that those who are walking in spiritual darkness stumble around hopelessly, lacking, godly wisdom, discernment and understanding. The Apostle Paul writes that these unbelievers walk "in the futility of their mind, being darkened in their understanding, excluded from the the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the hardness of their heart;" (Ephesians 4:17-18)
Someone once ask a blind man, "What is the worse thing about being blind?" He replied, "the worse thing is you can't see!" Unbelievers are spiritually blind and just can't see or understand spiritual things. Only God can open spiritual eyes. "But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)."
(Ephesians 2:2-5)
But what about believers who seem to also be stumbling around in the dark, also seemingly lacking godly wisdom, discernment and understanding? Paul wrote to the Ephesians about this ; "...lay aside the old self, which is being corrupted in accordance with the lusts of deceit, and that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind..." (Ephesians 4:22-23). In Romans 12:2, Paul wrote "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind...".
This transformation and renewing of your mind happens when you turn on the light of God's word. The unbeliever has no choice but to walk in the darkness. But Christians should no longer walk with them in the darkness because we now have the light of God's word that gives us His wisdom, discernment and understanding. Every step we take (every decision), can and should be made in the illumination of that spiritual light.
Take some time this week to read Psalm 119. I know....It is the longest chapter in the Bible with 176 verses. But I promise that you will be blessed and encouraged as you are reminded of the glory, power and wonder of God's matchless word. Read it, meditate on it and pray over it with thanksgiving. His word is indeed, a lamp to our feet and a light to our path. Maranatha!
